What kills me is that what Oakley is wearing in all the photos aren't "leggings" really, they're half-chaps. Half-chaps are leather tall boots without the shoe part. You wear them over short paddock boots for riding, they provide grip and keep the stirrup leathers from pinching your legs. I wear'em all the time even when I'm not riding, they keep horse shit out of your shoes and deflect snake bites and pointy plants.

Annie Oakley's uniform is killer diller. Always a star on the brim of her cowboy hat.

"the American playground parents told their kids to take control, to monopolize the toys, and generally ignored instances of line-jumping, angry displays, and rarely stepped in when children hit each other"

Sooooo not how we were raised in the South.

"And yes – if she had been screaming and calling the viewer a fucking moron idiot I doubt I would have been able to watch it or receive her message."

This isn't even just WP anymore. That? Racism. Pure and unadulterated. People who can't hear PoC express their hurt at racial oppression unless they take those white fee fee's into consideration- racists.

No different than punching someone in the face and ignoring them unless they kiss your ass while telling you that it hurt.

Repugnant.

"She wore leggings under short skirts, so people could see the shape of her legs as she ran out into the arena"

Here's another fucking theory: she wore leggings so people wouldn't see her legs while she ran around! In a skirt that was above her ankles!

Not that it would be more difficult to run about and preform in a floor-length skirt, no, she must have been sluting it up for male approval! /sarcasm

But seriously, that's why I buy my neice as many pairs of leggings as I do skirts (she hates the feel of pants in general). So she can run and play and not have to worry about flashing her underwear.
And because I don't want to have to train her to sit still and never do anything that would cause her skirt to flip more than an inch over her knees (see: most of what we humans call "playing like a kid")

Side note: have you ever tried to explain to a 5-year-old why the whole world faints over the impropriety of seeing someone else's underwear? It's a difficult concept to get across, I mean, if you aren't going to bring the rape-culture into it.

I was thinking about the apology thing earlier. In a scientific study of courtesy differences between Canadians and Americans, a totally unbiased source (my friend in San Francisco) led a rigorous study (at the playground, a couple of times) and found a fundamental difference in how American parents and Canadian parents encourage their children.

She'd already had the experience of parenting one child through her toddler years in Vancouver, and the second was born after they'd moved. She was shocked at the difference in playground behaviour by the parents, although she hung with similar groups of people - mainly white, middle-to-upper-middle-class, attachment-parenting Gen-Xers. While parents at the playgrounds she frequented in Canada encouraged communal play, emphasized taking turns, and disciplined the children at instances of hitting or grabbing, the American playground parents told their kids to take control, to monopolize the toys, and generally ignored instances of line-jumping, angry displays, and rarely stepped in when children hit each other.

My point, finally, is that maybe, because of their upbringing, American women find it hard to say the words "I'm sorry." The model of individual dominance does not allow for backing down or making mistakes; there is no mechanism for saving face. I'd say from my experience with heated, in-person arguments (usually working with non-profit organizations), that after a blow-up, both parties apologise (for rudeness) and that allows discussion to move onward. The apology might not happen the same day, or the same week, but it seems to be an implicitly understood process - that by apologising (even if you're not actually sorry) allows the discussion to resume on an even, clean-slate footing.

How is a widespread misogyny-fetish the ultimate symbol of feminism's success? That's the only part I don't get. I don't really care if people like to do unhealthy things, in general, but I resent the idea that I'm one of the "real" woman-haters if I don't support men treating women like shit just because sex is involved. Why should anyone, feminist or not, demand that feminists support misogyny in any context? It's bizarre. The charge that women who spend so much of their time trying to help women, prevent rape, stop the forced-birthers, get women the same pay as men, fund shelters, speak up about sexism, get women into positions of power, etc. are WORSE THAN FUCKING RAPISTS because they disagree on whether a man beating a woman is OK if genitals come into it is just so disgustingly awful -- how did this become the norm?

I don't know if it much matters at this point, and I don't know if Darragh Murphy meant it that way, but pheeno isn't "woefully inept at making challenging statements and defending them." She's righteously pissed off, and her thesis is perfectly clear to me.

The 3.96 GPA super-brilliant graduate from my college who introduced me to radical feminism and Catharine MacKinnon's work became a masochistic-I-don't-know-what shortly after we graduated.

Our formerly amazing friendship completely cooled off after we had this absolutely mind-numbing argument centered around my complete disbelief that she wanted me to think of an argument for why it would be okay for her -- no, not just okay, but "hot and sexy" -- in an Ideal World, to be "consensually beaten" by Catharine MacKinnon. She wasn't kidding. It wasn't a bizarro 'thought experiment' of some sort.

It turns out this ex-friend was probably abused by some uncle when she was growing up and etc. Now she is, according to another friend, looking online for "older dominant women who want to dominate a submissive genderqueer boy," with little to no success. Luckily, she is too scared to join the local bee dee ess emm scene, I guess it's too hetero for her or something.

Gosh. I'm still heartbroken. We had a wonderful friendship, she was/is brilliant. I learned so much from her. She read lots of Dworkin and MacKinnon et al and she obviously gets it, intellectually speaking.
I really don't understand what went wrong.
